Changde, previously referred to as ‘Wuling’, ‘Langzhou’, is a Chinese city located in the northwest of Hunan Province. The dialect spoken by the local people falls under the branch of Southwestern Mandarin Chinese. This language family distributes across eight provinces including Sichuan, Yunnan, Hunan and Hubei, and one municipality, namely Chongqing. The mutual intelligibility between Southwestern and Standard Mandarin can exceed 50% as tested by some studies. But there are still many differences between Standard Chinese and the local dialect. In phonetics and phonology, Changde dialect, does not have the retroflex consonants [tʂ] [tʂʰ] [ʂ] [ʐ] and does not distinguish the alveolar nasal [n] and approximant [l] at the phonemic tier as in Standard Mandarin, but it is featured by the velar nasal [ŋ] as a syllable initial which lacks in the standard one.
